The principle of the riveted joint
A typical rivet consists of a head and a shank. The head serves as a contact surface on the workpiece, while the shank is guided through prepared holes or self-piercing in the materials to be joined and then permanently formed. In contrast to screw connections, riveting does not require a thread; instead, the shank is fixed by forming.
Although modern joining processes such as welding are used in some areas, rivets remain important, especially when maximum strength and load-bearing capacity are required. In shipbuilding and aircraft construction, for example, riveted joints are still highly valued.
